Role Overview
The Head of Procurement will lead the full procurement function, overseeing sourcing, purchasing, and supplier management across raw materials, ingredients, packaging, retail products, and operational supplies. This senior leadership role ensures cost efficiency, quality assurance, and uninterrupted supply while aligning procurement activities with commercial and operational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Procurement Strategy: Develop and implement a comprehensive procurement strategy that supports cost optimisation, supply continuity, and quality standards.
- Supplier Management: Lead negotiations with local and international suppliers, securing favourable pricing, contract terms, and reliable delivery schedules.
- Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all sourcing and import activities adhere to Maltese and EU regulations, food safety requirements, and supplier documentation standards, liaising with legal teams as necessary.
- Cost Control and Analysis: Drive initiatives to optimise landed costs, manage supplier consolidation and tendering processes, and maintain accurate cost data for manufactured and retail products.
- Team Leadership: Provide guidance, coaching, and development opportunities for procurement team members, ensuring departmental goals are met and processes are consistently applied.
- Operational Oversight: Supervise stock management, system data integrity, and the accuracy of pricing configurations while coordinating supplier deliveries with internal teams.
- Digital Transformation: Lead digital procurement initiatives, including automated purchasing workflows, supplier portals, and process automation to enhance efficiency and control.
- Cross-Department Collaboration: Maintain strong working relationships with Manufacturing, Retail, Logistics, Finance, and Quality Assurance teams to ensure alignment with business objectives.
Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, or a related field. Professional Procurement and/or Supply Chain certifications are advantageous.
- Experience: 5–8 years in procurement, with a minimum of 2 years in a leadership role, ideally within FMCG, food, or manufacturing sectors.
- Language Skills: Excellent command of English is required; Maltese language skills are an asset.
- Communication Skills: Strong ability to convey ideas clearly and negotiate effectively with internal teams and external suppliers.
- Interpersonal Skills: Capable of fostering collaborative relationships across multiple departments and stakeholders.
- Technical Skills: Proficient with ERP systems and BI-driven procurement reporting tools.
- Organisation: Highly organised with attention to detail, able to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Self-Motivated: Proactive, driven, and capable of leading strategic initiatives independently.
- Problem-Solving: Skilled in analysing complex scenarios and implementing effective, data-driven solutions.
