Dental Assistant

Roles & Responsibilities:

The dental assistant ensures that the dental clinic is prepared to welcome patients and assists the Dentist while treating patients.

  • Opening the clinic and preparing for the Dental Surgeon’s arrival, as per preparation list.
  • Sterilising, as required.
  • Ensuring that the required documentation is updated accurately and regularly.
  • Preparing the clinic for the relevant appointments of the day: endo/ortho/prosthetics/ surgery – ensuring all materials and tools are ready for the dental surgeon to use.
  • Greeting the patient with a smile, ensuring they are comfortable and informed regarding their waiting time.
  • Handling medical files and patient records; guiding patients towards completing consent forms and attaching documents to patient’s records, as required.
  • Ensuring accurate patient details on hospital information system and any other system the dental clinic might use.
  • Ordering, organising and managing stock, as required.
  • Booking patient appointments, as required.
  • Providing quotes, as required.
  • Sanitising the area after each patient.
  • Cleaning and sanitising materials and instruments, as required.
  • Assisting the dental surgeon while treating patients, as directed and as required.
  • Assisting with x-rays.
  • Being knowledgeable about instruments and materials.
  • Completing all tasks in preparing for the Dental Clinic closure at the end of the work day.
  • Collating statistical data for reporting purposes, a required.
  • Liaising with dental technicians and third parties, as required.
  • Following the Department’s and the Hospital’s protocols, standards and procedures.
  • Assisting the department with any additional work, as required.
  • Respect patients’ privacy, dignity, wishes and beliefs and minimise any necessary discomfort.
  • Prepare patient, self, equipment and materials appropriately for the activity to be undertaken.
