

ER Nurse

Position Summary
The Staff Nurse provides skilled, evidence-based nursing care in the Emergency Room (ER), ensuring high standards of patient management and safety. The role involves coordinating care on a shift basis, supervising the ER team, and supporting the Head of Department (HOD) in managing daily operations and promoting professional practice.
Roles & Responsibilities:
The post holder will possess clinical expertise and will supervise and deliver direct patient care in the Emergency Room (ER). He/she will also manage the ER on a shift-by-shift basis developing an awareness of strategic management in the absence of the HOD / DNO. Under the supervision of the HOD, ER Staff Nurse will assist in the management of the ER team to promote professional practice development.
Clinical Practice
- Deliver and supervise high-quality, compassionate care to patients and families in line with hospital policies and professional standards.
- Coordinate the assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care on each shift.
- Communicate effectively with patients and families, providing updates, education, and emotional support.
- Perform extended nursing procedures (e.g., casting, haemodynamic monitoring, ambulance support) following competency-based training.
- Ensure adherence to infection control, health promotion, and patient safety guidelines.
- Recognize changes in patients’ conditions, act promptly, and escalate appropriately.
- Ensure safe and effective transfer and transportation of patients.
Management & Leadership (in the absence of HOD)
- Maintaining professional standards of conduct, communication, and appearance.
- Support implementation of hospital policies on safety, infection control, and risk management.
- Handle complaints and incidents professionally and in accordance with policy.
- Encourage innovation, teamwork, and continuous quality improvement.
Education & Professional Development
- Maintain professional registration and ongoing education as per the Maltese Code of Ethics for Nurses and Midwives.
- Support staff learning through mentoring, orientation, and skills training.
- Maintain competency in the use of emergency care equipment and advanced resuscitation skills.
- Participate in continuing professional development and mandatory hospital training.
