Political Specialist

The U.S. Mission in Malta is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for Political Specialist in the Political/Economic Section.

Job Overview:

Serve as an Embassy Locally Engaged Staff (LES) Specialist on political and economic issues that affect U.S. government interests in Malta, Europe, and the broader Mediterranean region. Serve as the lead LES Specialist on human rights, religious freedom, and trafficking in persons, to include responsibility for leading Post’s input into annual State Department reporting on these issues, working in conjunction with Post’s Human Rights Officer. Monitor, report on, and advise Embassy officials on Malta’s internal political dynamics, as well as Malta’s external relations with the United States, European Union institutions and other EU member states, and other important third countries globally. Draft reporting cables on the issues outlined above.

Qualification requirements;

Education:

  • Completion of a Bachelor’s Degree in any of the following fields: Economics, History, Law, International Relations or Journalism.

Experience:

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in Business, Finance, Government, Journalism, or academia, with an emphasis on research and analysis, reporting, and/or working with the Maltese government and Maltese non-government organizations.

Language:

  • English: Level 4 - Fluent; speaking/reading/writing, may include the ability to translate
  • Maltese: Level 4 - Fluent; speaking/reading/writing, may include the ability to translate

Job Knowledge:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of Malta’s political system and government institutions, political economy, and recent political and economic history.

Skills And Abilities:

Demonstrated ability to independently develop and maintain a network of professional contacts to elicit information. Demonstrated ability to deliver brief oral presentations and analysis on political and economic topics. Demonstrated ability to draft written products in English, including emails, and longer form summary papers and reports, analyzing significant political and economic developments. Demonstrated flexibility in responding to continuously changing information and policy needs and goals of the Mission with limited human and capital resources. Demonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.
