Role Overview
The Tax Strategy & Compliance Specialist will take ownership of the Company’s tax division, combining technical leadership with commercial development and senior client advisory responsibilities. Reporting to the Head of Business Operations, the selected professional will guide the team, oversee complex assignments and strengthen the Business’s tax capabilities while maintaining high standards of governance and regulatory conformity.
Key Responsibilities
- Tax Function Direction: Establish the priorities and longer-term direction of the department, ensuring its activities support the Business’s wider commercial plans and financial goals.
- Service Development: Identify opportunities to introduce additional tax solutions, improve existing services and generate sustainable income for the Company.
- Senior Tax Advice: Guide clients on reorganisations, acquisitions, disposals, international investments, corporate arrangements and other technically demanding matters.
- Transfer Pricing: Advise on cross-border pricing arrangements and supporting records, ensuring that client structures are consistent with applicable international principles.
- Regulatory Oversight: Direct the completion of company tax returns, declarations, reports and other mandatory submissions in line with Maltese legislation and relevant overseas requirements.
- International Tax Developments: Assess the effect of EU and global initiatives, including BEPS measures, the OECD global minimum tax rules, CRS and FATCA, and explain their practical consequences to clients and colleagues.
- Risk and Governance: Create appropriate controls for identifying, evaluating and managing taxation-related exposure across internal activities and client assignments.
- Policies and Procedures: Introduce departmental guidance, working methods and quality controls that promote reliable, consistent and effective service delivery.
- Client Advisory: Serve as the senior point of contact for significant engagements, translating complicated taxation issues into clear and commercially practical recommendations.
- Relationship Development: Build lasting partnerships with clients while identifying ways in which tax expertise may complement the Company’s accounting, corporate and advisory solutions.
- External Stakeholders: Maintain effective professional connections with fiscal authorities, regulators, auditors and other relevant organisations.
- Industry Representation: Participate in conferences, technical events and professional bodies to raise the profile of the Business and remain connected to changes within the field.
- Team Management: Direct, coach and support tax professionals while overseeing workload distribution, appraisals, development needs and future leadership requirements.
- Learning and Knowledge Sharing: Encourage participation in technical training and recognised professional programmes, including ADIT, ACCA or CTA, while ensuring that relevant updates are shared throughout the team.
- Technology and Process Improvement: Champion suitable digital platforms and automated processes that enhance accuracy, productivity and the quality of management information.
- Commercial Management: Monitor departmental budgets, fees, invoicing and margins to ensure that the tax division contributes positively to the Company’s financial performance.
- Business Generation: Assist with proposals, presentations and prospective client meetings, helping the Business win new engagements and deepen established relationships.
- Market Insight: Provide senior management with informed commentary on legislative changes, fiscal policy and market conditions that may influence future business decisions.
- Professional Content: Contribute to technical articles, client communications and presentation materials that demonstrate the Company’s knowledge and credibility.
Qualifications, Skills and Attributes
- Education: A bachelor’s degree in Accountancy, Law, Taxation or a comparable discipline is required. An equivalent recognised professional credential will also be considered, while qualifications such as ADIT, ACCA or CTA would be advantageous.
- Experience: Substantial senior-level exposure to taxation advice, planning and regulatory obligations is essential, preferably acquired within professional or financial services. Previous responsibility for developing business and leading a specialist tax function is also required.
- Tax Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of Maltese fiscal legislation, company taxation, structural planning and the international rules affecting cross-border arrangements.
- Regulatory Awareness: Familiarity with European and international taxation initiatives, information-exchange obligations and evolving requirements affecting multinational activity.
- Language Skills: Excellent command of English is required to succeed in this role. The ability to communicate in Maltese would be an asset.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication, presentation and negotiation abilities, with the confidence to explain technical subjects to varied audiences.
- Interpersonal Skills: A consultative and relationship-focused approach, with the ability to establish credibility among clients, colleagues, public authorities and professional contacts.
