Malta Sailing Academy 

The World Sailing Sea Survival course was developed following the 1998 Sydney Hobart Race tragedy, which resulted in the loss of 6 lives. The aim of the course is to prepare skippers and crew for the worst possible scenarios which may cause accidents, emergencies, or abandonment.
During the course, students will have the chance to operate lifejackets, open life rafts, and practice survival techniques – all hugely beneficial should the need arise. We recommend this course to all sailors intending to carry out long passages. The certificate is also required by 30% of the crew taking part in the middle sea race, except for double-handed vessels where both participants should have the certificate.
The full course consists of theory sessions as well as a practical session, whereas the refresher consists of theory sessions only.

World Sailing Sea Survival

The STCW Basic Safety Training course (STCW95 &amp; STCW 2010) is the legal minimum requirement for anyone looking for commercial work aboard vessels over 24 metres, in accordance with the STCW Code A-VI/1.
The course runs over five days and is assessed via continual practical assessment with theory-based examinations. During the course students will cover:


Personal Survival Techniques (STCW A-VI/1-1) - Essential sea survival training to deal with a range of emergency situations. Includes the launch of a life raft, using safety equipment, preparation for sea survival and use of search and rescue organisations.


Fire Fighting and Fire Prevention (STCW A-VI/1-2) - Identifies the different types of fire that can occur on board and how to prevent them from starting. Practical training includes use of fire fighting equipment and breathing apparatus to extinguish various types and sizes of fires including in smoke filled enclosed spaces.


Elementary First Aid (STCW A-VI/1-3) - A combination of theory and practical sessions on how to respond to the most common emergencies on board. You will learn CPR, different bandaging methods, how to move a patient and how to improvise when there is no equipment available.


Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (STCW A-VI/1-4) - An introduction to accident prevention and safety procedures including alarms and signals. It also covers your rights at work, employment conditions and work practices such as safe working, pollution prevention and relations with others on board.


STCW 95 training must be refreshed every five years
As of January 2014, all seafarers should complete Proficiency in Security Awareness (STCW A-VI/6-1) training, in addition to the STCW 95 training.

STCW 95 – Full Course

Optimise the use of your onboard safety equipment.
Be it a hand-held or fixed device, a marine VHF radio is paramount to your safety and knowing how to operate it and how to use the correct procedures could save a vessel, or your own life.
The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC)  equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio. This includes both fixed and handheld equipment using International channels.
If you obtained your VHF certificate before 1999 you will need to upgrade your certificate if you purchase a VHF DSC set. We will be able to organise this upgrade for you.
The course will be carried out in our classroom, with two fully functional VHF DSC simulators which you will practice on as the course progresses.

This basic course provides the fundamental skills needed to handle a powerboat. No previous knowledge is required and you may expect to be introduced to topics including:

This certificate will be coastally endorsed.

RYA Powerboat Level 2

The Transport Malta Nautical Licence is required by Maltese citizens and foreign residents living on the island. It allows the holder to operate a vessel (powerboat, sailing vessel, or Jetski) with a combined horsepower of 30Hp or over and up to 24m in length in Maltese Territorial Waters only (12 Nautical Miles).
The course consists of both theory and practical components. We provide handouts for the course.Our theory tuition is online.  The Location and Time for the practical session will be advised during the Course. 

Examination

Following the successful completion of your course, the school will submit your application to Transport Malta for your oral exam (approx. 15 mins long). Transport Malta will provide us with an examination date which we will notify you by email.
 
Please bear in mind that when you are given an exam date and choose to postpone or reschedule, your exam fee is forfeited, and you will need to re-apply once again with Transport Malta.
 
Upon the successful completion of your exam from Transport Malta, you can present your stamped certificate the next day at Transport Malta offices Lija (https://news.transport.gov.mt/moorings-office-in-hal-lija/) along with two passport-sized photos and €23.29. You should receive your license at your preferred address. (within approx. two weeks.)

Transport Malta Nautical Licence

We understand that sometimes you want to learn in the familiar environment of your own boat with people you know. Our instructors can teach you anything from a half day of docking practice to a full familiarisation and handling of your new boat, all while focusing on your own individual requirements.
Instruction can be arranged any time that is suitable for you.
Cost:
€40 per hour.
There will be an extra charge to cover the instructor’s travel from Malta to Gozo. If you have booked in any tuition please make sure that you carry the basic equipment which will be needed.

Own boat tuition Terms and conditions
The owner is considered to be the ‘skipper’ of the vessel at all times and is responsible for the vessel, the provisioning and fuel and for ensuring the vessel is fully insured, seaworthy, and with all boat papers in date and onboard to satisfy the local transport authority and maritime law of the country in which the training is taking place. If any accidents occur onboard during training the claim is to be made against the insurance of the boat. Malta Sailing Academy shall not be liable for any incidents or accidents onboard. The owner must notify their insurance company that there will be a qualified instructor on board delivering tuition but the owner remains the skipper at all times. It is also agreed that the owner’s insurance is fully comprehensive and covers all aspects of normal marine insurance for the area in which the skipper is expected to sail.

The International Certificate for Operators of Pleasure Craft (ICC) is a certificate that is intended to provide evidence of competence when requested by officials in foreign countries. It is issued under the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Inland Transport Committee Working Party on Inland Water Transport Resolution 40.
 
The certificate is issued with endorsements for different categories and is valid for five years from the date of issue. Once the certificates expire, you’ll just need to fill in a renewal form to revalidate your certificate.  This Certificate is valid for vessels up to 10m.
 
If you are a national of one of these countries and are resident in that country or another country on this list the RYA is not authorised to issue you with an ICC:

International Certificate of Competence – ICC

This RYA First Aid course covers all the usual topics from a boating perspective. It is designed to give a working knowledge of First Aid to skippers and those using small craft.
If you are looking to get commercially endorsed, we will also be able to provide the additional Category C subsection.
The RYA First Aid course is recommended by the MCA and HSE fulfills the requirements for:

professional skippers of small craft working within 60 miles of a safe haven, including Boatmasters;
the Senior First Aid certificate needed by offshore racers subject to World Sailing’s regulations on first aid training (OSR 4.08.4)

Be able to gauge what sort of action needs to be taken, know how to perform CPR with drowning protocol and other First Aid techniques, and be familiar with the procedures for evacuation by helicopter and radioing for medical advice.
