Marine Mechanical Engineer
MFF Limited operates a fleet of approximately 35 vessels (10–50m LOA) across the Mediterranean, supporting Atlantic bluefin tuna capture and aquaculture operations. We are looking for an experienced engineer to take clear ownership of our fleet's mechanical performance — someone who gets to the root cause, directs the right fix, and keeps our vessels running.
What You Will Do:
The Marine Mechanical Engineer is the technical point of reference for the mechanical systems on our vessels. This is primarily a planning, technical, and procurement role rather than a hands-on workshop position. You will assess the condition of engines and machinery, identify the parts and services needed, build and manage maintenance schedules, and source and purchase parts from reliable suppliers, so that the fleet is ready for every stage of the season, from tow and transfer to feeding and harvest. You will work closely with the mechanics, crews, and external contractors who carry out the physical work.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop a planned maintenance system for every vessel: schedules, work orders, running hours and service history.
- Work closely with the Fleet Superintendent to organise and coordinate work by in-house mechanics and external contractors.
- Act as the technical lead for the mechanical systems on the fleet: main engines, gearboxes, shafting, outboards, generators, pumps, compressors, hydraulics and deck machinery.
- Plan maintenance around the operational calendar so vessels are available for tow, transfer, feeding and harvest.
- Coordinate internally within the vessel maintenance department to ensure deadlines are consistently met.
- Identify exact part requirements using manuals, parts catalogues, engine serial numbers and OEM documentation.
- Source parts and services from OEMs, authorised dealers and local and overseas suppliers; request and compare quotations on price, quality and lead time.
- Raise purchase orders, follow up deliveries and handle imports, returns and warranty claims.
- Build and maintain a list of approved suppliers and service agents and negotiate pricing and terms.
- Keep critical spares on hand: set minimum stock levels, manage the spares inventory and avoid downtime caused by missing parts.
- Prepare and monitor the vessel maintenance and spares budget; track costs per vessel.
- Keep technical files, manuals, certificates, inspection records and purchase history organised and audit ready.
- Recommend upgrades, replacements and refits that improve reliability, fuel efficiency and lifecycle cost, and support new-build or refit projects.
The ideal candidate will have a:
- Degree or MCAST Diploma in Marine Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline (MQF Level 5 or above).
- At least 3 years' experience in marine engineering, fleet maintenance or technical superintendent work.
- Strong technical knowledge of marine diesel engines, propulsion, hydraulics and auxiliary systems, enough to diagnose problems and specify the right parts.
- Proven experience planning maintenance and buying technical parts and services.
- Full driving licence.
Skills and personal attribute:
- Strong analytical and fault-finding ability; able to turn a mechanical problem into a clear parts list and action plan.
- Highly organised, with a strong eye for detail in part numbers, specifications and records.
- Commercially aware: negotiates well with suppliers and balances cost, quality and lead time.
- Clear communicator who works well with crews, mechanics, contractors, suppliers and management.
- Good spoken and written English; Maltese is an advantage.
What we offer:
- A technically varied fleet across two distinct vessel types.
- Central role in a growing Mediterranean aquaculture business.
- Competitive salary commensurate with experience.
- Regional reach through the EBCON Group network.
