Chief Accountant/ Financial Controller

On behalf of our client, a ship management company, we are looking for a Chief Accountant/ Financial Controller , to be based at their offices in Limassol, Cyprus.

Main tasks and responsibilities
  • Lead, manage and supervise the Accounts Department, including allocation of responsibilities, prioritisation of workloads, and development of the accounting team.
  • Take overall responsibility for the accuracy, completeness and integrity of the Company's accounting records and relevant Group entities.
  • Oversee the general ledger, month-end and year-end closing processes, including accruals, prepayments, provisions, reconciliations and other accounting adjustments.
  • Review and ensure the accuracy of key financial accounts, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, balance sheet accounts, intercompany and related-party balances.
  • Prepare and/or review monthly financial and management reporting, including Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, cash-flow reporting, ageing analysis, intercompany reconciliations and supporting schedules.
  • Analyse financial results, variances and unusual transactions, providing Management with clear insight into material financial issues, risks and areas requiring attention.
  • Oversee cash management, bank reconciliations, payment controls, cash-flow forecasting and short-term liquidity requirements.
  • Supervise accounting and financial control relating to vessel operations and ship-management activities, including vessel expenditure, budgets, management fees, recharges and intercompany transactions.
  • Ensure appropriate allocation and accounting treatment of transactions across ship-owning, bareboat charter, management and other relevant Group entities.
  • Ensure timely and accurate VAT, tax and statutory compliance, coordinating with external tax advisers where required.
  • Lead and coordinate statutory audits and act as the principal accounting contact for external auditors, including preparation of financial statements, audit schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Maintain and continuously improve accounting policies, procedures, internal controls and approval processes, ensuring appropriate segregation of duties and compliance with Company requirements.
  • Ensure effective use and accurate application of the Company's accounting and ERP systems, including DANAOS, and support improvements in accounting processes, reporting and automation.
  • Identify and escalate significant accounting, financial, control or compliance issues and ensure appropriate corrective actions are implemented.
Educational and skill requirements
  • University degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics or related discipline.
  • Professional accounting qualification such as ACA, ACCA, CPA or equivalent.
  • Minimum 7--10 years of relevant accounting and financial experience, including experience in a Chief Accountant, Financial Controller or similar senior role.
  • Strong knowledge of IFRS and financial reporting.
  • Good understanding of VAT, taxation and statutory accounting requirements.
  • Proven experience with month-end and year-end closing.
  • Experience managing statutory audits and dealing with external auditors.
  • Strong bank, cash-flow, accounts payable and reconciliation experience.
  • Previous experience supervising an accounting team.
  • Strong Excel skills and good knowledge of ERP/accounting systems.
  • Experience with DANAOS or another maritime ERP/accounting system would be considered a significant advantage.
  • Previous experience within shipping, ship management or the maritime industry is highly desirable.
  • Able to communicate clearly with Management, auditors, banks, advisers and other departments.
  • Reliable, discreet and capable of handling confidential financial information.
  • Proactive, practical and solution-oriented.
  • Excellent command of English; Greek would be an advantage.
