Role Overview

Heroix is collaborating with our Client in the entertainment sector to recruit a Chief Operations Officer. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer and joining the executive leadership team, the successful candidate will take responsibility for the trading results, service delivery and day-to-day effectiveness of an assigned portfolio of business units.

The position involves turning business priorities into practical action, strengthening management capability and improving customer experiences while building lasting financial success. Working alongside the Chief Commercial Officer and fellow executives, the COO will ensure that operations support commercial ambitions. The remit may develop to include further business units, operational duties or strategic assignments as directed by the CEO.

Main tasks and responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Business Unit Direction: Set priorities for the assigned portfolio, guiding managers towards stronger financial results, effective operations and consistently high service standards.

  • Revenue and Customer Growth: Identify ways to deepen customer relationships, encourage greater spending and make better use of available capacity, supporting increased income and sustainable margins.

  • Service Delivery: Establish clear expectations across customer touchpoints and address gaps in delivery to create a reliable and rewarding customer experience.

  • Planning and Financial Control: Prepare operating plans and budgets, monitor expenditure and allocate people, facilities and other resources where they can deliver the greatest business value.

  • Performance Review: Interpret financial reports and operational measures to understand results, identify underperformance and agree corrective action with the relevant managers.

  • Management Accountability: Set measurable objectives and ensure leaders take ownership of their teams’ service, operational and financial outcomes.

  • Leadership Development: Guide and mentor managers, strengthening their judgement, leadership skills and ability to develop their own teams.

  • People Planning: Partner with Human Resources to assess staffing needs, develop internal talent, prepare future leaders and improve organisational effectiveness.

  • Cross-Department Coordination: Build effective communication between business units and support functions, ensuring teams understand shared priorities and work towards common goals.

  • Commercial Execution: Partner with the Chief Commercial Officer to ensure operational capacity supports growth plans, promotional campaigns and initiatives designed to improve the customer journey.

  • Change and Improvement: Oversee the introduction of new technologies, revised processes and operational changes that improve productivity and business performance.

  • Executive Contribution: Provide practical operational insight into business strategy, proposed investments and potential areas for expansion, supporting wider operations and additional assignments when required.

  • Compliance and Controls: Ensure activities meet applicable legislation, regulatory obligations, workplace safety standards and internal policies, supported by effective controls and risk assessments.

  • Resilience and Incident Management: Maintain arrangements for service continuity, direct the operational response to serious disruptions and safeguard the Business’s assets, reputation and ability to operate.

Educational and skill requirements

Qualifications, Skills and Attributes

  • Education: A bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Hospitality Management, Operations Management or a relevant discipline is required. Postgraduate study or an appropriate professional credential would be advantageous.

  • Experience: An established record in senior leadership within a business serving customers directly, including responsibility for complex operations and measurable commercial success.

  • Sector Background: Experience in entertainment, hospitality, tourism, retail, food and beverage, or another consumer-oriented industry would be beneficial.

  • Language Skills: Excellent command of English is required to succeed in this role. The ability to communicate in Maltese would be an asset.

  • Communication Skills: The ability to explain priorities clearly, present recommendations confidently and keep colleagues informed across different levels of the Business.

  • Interpersonal Skills: Strong relationship-building skills, with the judgement to manage stakeholder expectations, encourage cooperation and handle sensitive discussions professionally.

  • Leadership: Demonstrated ability to manage teams spanning several functions, develop managers and maintain clear expectations for individual and collective performance.

  • Financial Skills: Confidence in preparing budgets, evaluating business plans and interpreting financial results to inform resource allocation and commercial decisions.

  • Technical Skills: Practical understanding of operational planning, service improvement, performance measurement and the introduction of technology or revised working methods.

  • Change Management: Evidence of successfully guiding organisational change and securing team commitment to new approaches.

  • Organisation: The ability to coordinate competing demands across several business units while maintaining oversight of priorities, resources and delivery.

  • Self-Motivated: A proactive approach, with personal ownership of results and the drive to pursue improvements in service, efficiency and financial performance.

  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical judgement, with the ability to assess complex situations, weigh alternatives and make timely, well-founded decisions.

  • Adaptability: Readiness to take on an evolving portfolio and contribute to wider business priorities as operational needs change.
